I enter into a session without pre-conceived notions about any individuals situation, and engage with a curiosity to understand the subjective lived experience of each client.   3. Respect and Dignity: Every individual's journey is unique, and a trauma-informed approach respects their autonomy and dignity. It acknowledges that survivors are the experts of their own experiences.

  4. Awareness of Triggers: A trauma-informed therapist is vigilant about potential triggers and strives to avoid re-traumatisation. I use gentle language and ask for consent before delving into sensitive topics. I tread lightly while learning about the potential triggers and always promote my clients in re-directing the session if things feel too tricky at any given moment. 

  5. Understanding the Effects: Recognising how trauma can affect the mind, body, and spirit is key. A trauma-informed therapist understands the profound and lasting impact of trauma on a person's well-being. Certain smells, words, textures, tones of voice, etc, can surface emotional responses. Certain safe scenarios can feel profoundly unsafe. 

  6. Collaboration and Choice: Clients are seen as partners in their healing journey, and their choices are respected. Therapeutic decisions are made collaboratively, ensuring clients have a sense of agency. The relational dynamic between the client and therapist is key, all sessions are co-created. 

  7. Cultural Sensitivity: Cultural factors and individual backgrounds are considered. A trauma-informed therapist is attuned to how cultural differences can influence trauma responses and healing processes. Our cultural up-bringing shapes our expectations and responses to many of life's varying experiences.
